Online vs Physical Portfolios – Still Hungry?
23, Feb, 2010If a resume is the ‘appetiser’ – or taster – of one’s skills and experience as a designer, the portfolio is the ‘main’ that follows. I’m not talking so much a supersized, expansive feast here. Rather, this ‘main’ is generous and appropriately-sized and aims to have the ‘diner’, once finished, feeling ‘pleasantly full’ but nevertheless still wanting dessert or, to end this metaphor, to see more of you.

Four Stages of Recovery
17, Feb, 2010The GFC took some stuffing out of us all over these past 12 months. However, what the past year has allowed us to do is really take stock of our clients, our business, the creative industry and where we all fit within it. Recruitment is of course the core business of Aquent, so I thought it would be interesting to define the ‘four stages of recovery’ model vs. what we at Aquent have experienced throughout our Australia/New Zealand region focussing on the recruitment demand. This analysis will also help us all plan ahead for the future in terms of temporary and permanent hires.

History
In 1986 three Harvard University classmates started a desktop publishing business in their dorm room. As a side business they acted as talent agents for their friends, connecting designers they knew with creative projects. That side business (originally called MacTemps) quickly became their main focus, with operations spreading across the United States and, in 1991, overseas.
Over the years, Aquent has frequently been referred to as innovative, pioneering, and progressive. “From the beginning we wanted to do things differently from other staffing firms,” explains co-founder and CEO, John Chuang.
“For instance, in 1992 we were the first agency in the US to offer comprehensive and affordable healthcare and retirement benefits to our talent. People said we’d be bankrupt in a year. Turns out we weren’t. In fact, we ended up establishing a new standard for for the industry.”
Harvard Business School was so intrigued by Aquent’s ‘crazy’ approach that they wrote a case study examining how Aquent built loyalty among the contingent workforce, a study that was taught to every MBA student.
Today, Aquent talent work with many of the world’s most valuable and well-known brands. We have over 70 offices in 18 countries with headquarters in Boston, Massachusetts.
